Three Russian films, including much-lauded ‘Beanpole,’ shortlisted for Oscars

Three Russian films have been shortlisted for Academy Awards in three different categories.

In the running for Best Foreign-Language Film is 28-year-old Kantemir Balagov’s Dylda (Beanpole), a story about women’s kinship in the aftermath of the Siege of Leningrad that has received extensive critical attention. He Can’t Live Without Cosmos, an animated short by Konstantin Bronzit, was shortlisted in that category, following in the footsteps of its prequel. Finally, a spot on the Best Documentary shortlist went to Viktor Kosakovsky’s Aquarela, which explores the nature of water.

The final list of Oscar nominees will be made public on January 13 in advance of the award ceremony itself on February 9.
