Here’s an interactive map of all Moscow’s hate crimes

Human rights workers in Russia have unveiled a map of all the recorded hate crimes in Moscow in recent years. The attacks took place in 170 different locations around the city, resulting in 131 people injured and 39 killed.

The map, built and maintained by the Civic Assistance Committee and the SOVA Center for Information and Analysis, combines data on hate crimes against ethnic minorities, religious groups, gays, and others. The vast majority of people targeted in these attacks have been migrants from the Caucasus and Central Asia.

For each recorded attack, the hate-crimes map features data about the location of the incident, the identity of the victim, the nature of the assault, and any subsequent police action. Most of the attacks were never resolved. According to the map, hate-crime victims or their families reported the attacks to the authorities only 33 percent of the time.

According to Alexander Verkhovsky, the director of the SOVA Center, the rate of hate crimes in Moscow peaked in 2008 and 2009. Verkhovsky speculates that violence has decreased recently because many of the men in Moscow most likely to commit hate crimes have left the city to go fight with separatists in eastern Ukraine.
