A Sukhoi Su-33 Russian fighter crashed after a failed attempt to land on the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier stationed in the Mediterranean Sea, reported news agency Interfax on Monday, citing Russia's Defense Ministry.
According to publication The Aviationist, the accident occurred on December 3. The pilot managed to eject himself and was rescued.
Russia's Defense Ministry clarified that the fighter jet had skidded off the deck of Admiral Kuznetsov. The cause of the accident was a break in the arresting gear cable - several such cables are needed to slow an aircraft down after its lands on deck.
The previous accident involving the Admiral Kuznetsov occurred on November 13 when a Mikoyan MiG-29 fighter jet fell into the water. The pilot also managed to eject himself and was not injured.
After the first incident, Russia's Defense Ministry reported only that an accident had occurred without giving any details.
