New patriotic education program hails Crimea unification
Starting next school year, a new patriotic education program will be launched in Russian schools, said Education Minister Dmitry Livanov at a nationwide meeting with regional education authorities. The “Day of Crimean Unification with Russia” has been included in a list of historic dates schools must commemorate, reports news agency Interfax.
At the meeting, Livanov explained that four main federal holidays will form the basis for the patriotic education program. The holidays include Russia Day (held on June 12), National Unity Day (in celebration of expelling Poles from Russia in 1612, held on November 4), Victory Day (celebrating Soviet victory in World War II, May 9), and the Day of Crimean Unification with Russia (March 18).
Schools will be required to organize events and educational projects meant to spark student interest and educate students on Russian history. Recommendations for events and projects have been sent out to schools all over the country.
“These four holidays should serve as the framework for a building a whole system of instructional events,” noted Livanov.
- In March 2014, Crimea seceded from Ukraine after a regional referendum, and joined Russia as a new Russian region.
- In March 2015, Russia celebrated the first anniversary of unification with Crimea with rallies all over the country. A group of middle school students came to one of these rallies in the city of Saratov with national symbols of Ukraine. They were detained by police.
