The ECHR ordered the Russian authorities to pay compensation to residents of Dagestan who were tortured by the police

The European Court of Human Rights awarded Derbent residents Islam Barzukaev and Gasan Kurbanov 26 thousand euros in compensation each. In 2019, they were kidnapped by employees of the Center for Specialized Enforcement of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and forced to confess to committing crimes under torture.

Both young men were accused of illegal possession of weapons and creation of an illegal armed group (IAF). They stated that they confessed under torture.

Subsequently, the defendants complained of ill-treatment in the pre-trial detention center: without explanation, they were repeatedly placed in a punishment cell and were not provided with medical care. The investigation many times refused to initiate criminal proceedings against the police for torture and did not interrogate the victims.

Let us recall that on September 16, 2022, Russia ceased to be a party to the European Convention on Human Rights.
