Armenia has denied claims by Russian authorities about a request to protect the border with other countries

Yerevan did not ask Moscow to leave Russian border guards on the border with Turkey and Iran, as Russian officials previously stated. This was announced by the Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia Armen Grigoryan.

Earlier, Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov and FSB Director Alexander Bortnikov reported that Russian border guards, at the request of Armenia, would continue to guard the border with Turkey and Iran.

Grigoryan denied this statement. On Public TV, he said that Yerevan proposed to Moscow to withdraw Russian border guards from Yerevan Zvartnots airport, 17 border points on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and two bases supporting Russian peacekeepers in Sisian and Goris, which will be done.

“The Russian side accepted this proposal and asked whether Yerevan proposes to withdraw border guards from the Armenian-Turkish and Armenian-Iranian border. We replied that there are agreements there, and at the moment we are not discussing the issue of withdrawal... But there was no such request from us,” Grigoryan said.

Recently, in Moscow, after a long break, a meeting was held between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Pashinyan recalled that Russian border guards will be withdrawn from Yerevan Zvartnots airport. In addition, the Russian military will leave a number of regions of Armenia, where they have been since 2020, which was marked by the beginning of the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh. Pashinyan has criticized Moscow many times and spoken out in favor of closer relations with Europe and the United States. In addition, Armenia has actually ceased participation in the pro-Russian military-political bloc CSTO.
