Police near Volgograd have detained two men suspected of stealing 1,300 bottles of beer, according to the news agency Interfax.

Local authorities first became aware of the missing alcohol this past weekend, when a truck driver reported being robbed, after he pulled over on the highway to tend to mechanical problems with his vehicle. The driver says roughly 1,300 bottles of beer (worth about 70,000 rubles, or $1,300) disappeared from his cargo container while he was making repairs.

Witnesses to the robbery told police that a car pulled up behind the truck and idled there briefly. As a result, suspicion fell on two local men, one of whom has a prior conviction for theft. Both men were apprehended on Sunday. All but 40 bottles of beer had been consumed.

“When police arrived at their home, both men were drunk. They had shared the stolen beer with all their friends and relatives. You might say that half the town was cutting loose yesterday,” a source told Interfax.
