Summer vacation allegedly cut short for Kaliningrad schoolchildren, to accommodate Governor's visit

Some schoolchildren in Kaliningrad, Russia's western exclave, are reportedly being called to class early, despite the fact that it's still summer vacation, because Acting Governor Nikolai Tsukanov is planning a visit.

The father of a second-grader at an elementary school in Kaliningrad told the local news website New Kaliningrad that he recently received a phone call from his child's teacher, informing him that summer vacation was ending a week early, in order to accommodate the Governor's visit. "We need some people to be in class," the teacher allegedly told the father, "so that children are studying."

The school in question, School Number 31, happens to be building a brand new stadium right now, leading to some suspicion that Governor Tsukanov is interested in viewing the construction more than anything else.

According to Governor Tsukanov's official spokesperson, he is scheduled to visit a school today, August 19. Earlier this week, he stopped by another school, where he greeted students playing outdoor sports. A teacher told reporters that the children were there as part of a summer camp.
