Russia's Senate Speaker proposes a single online portal for Russian-language media

Valentina Matvinenko, the Chairperson of Russia's Federal Council, has proposed the creation of a single Internet portal for Russian-language media.

Speaking at the Fifth World Congress of Compatriots, Matvinenko said the portal would provide Russian media with “timely and, most importantly, accurate information about Russian domestic and foreign affairs."

Access to such information, she emphasized, is especially important "considering the information war being waged against our country."

  • There are currently two state news agencies in Russia: TASS and the news agency Russia Today (formerly RIA Novosti). In addition, the state owns the All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company (VGTRK) which includes television, radio stations, and Rossiiskaya Gazeta, the government's official newspaper of record.
