26 years ago, Muscovites mobbed their first ever McDonald's. Today, the people of Barnaul are having their turn.

Earlier today, the Russian city of Barnaul opened its first ever McDonald's restaurant. When the doors swung open for business, customers stampeded into the eatery, forming a crowd that resembled the long lines that appeared in Moscow, when McDonald's first arrived in the Soviet Union on January 30, 1990.

Locals in Berdsk, situated just to the north of Barnaul, recently protested against the opening of another McDonald's in their city, arguing that the new construction risks draining the area's heating supply and leaving many residences in the cold. The Berdsk McDonald's is expected to open by the end of the year.

When Burger King first arrived in Belarus in July 2015, Minsk locals similarly came in droves to sample the foreign cuisine. Unfortunately for Burger King, its Belarusian customers interpreted quite literally the chain's advertisements for “unlimited fountain drinks,” showing up with empty bottles (some as big as five-liter bottles), ready to fill up with soda to bring home.
