Two oppositionists win seats in Belarus’s parliament
Among the newly-elected members of Belarus’s parliament, the National Assembly, were two politicians from opposition parties - Anna Kanopatskaya of the United Civil Party and Elena Anisim of the Belarussian Language Society - as per the results of elections that took place on September 11.
The country’s previous parliamentary convocation included no opposition members.
- Belarus’s lower house of parliament consists of 110 deputies elected by simple majority.
- The turnout at the September 11 elections was over 74 percent of the population.
