Three blocks lose power at Russian nuclear power plant

At the Kalininskaya Nuclear Power Plant in the north of Russia’s Tver region, three power units went offline on the morning of July 18. Representatives of the plant told the wire agency TASS that “background radiation levels are all in order” in the area and that “no damage has been done to the equipment” at the plant.

Regional emergency responders and the plant’s employees told RIA Novostithat a short circuit caused the power outage. A representative of Russia’s federal nuclear energy agency added that after one of the Kalininskaya plant’s transformers shut down, a central power line went offline as well, causing an outage at the first, second, and fourth blocks of the plant.

The Kalininskaya Nuclear Power Plant has been active since May 1984. Its four units have a total capacity of 4,000 megawatts.
