Half of Russia’s executive cabinet has been replaced. Here’s who’s out.
On January 21, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin presented his newly selected cabinet to Vladimir Putin. It includes nine vice premiers rather than 10, and six of those individuals are new to their posts. Nine ministry portfolios were transferred into new hands. Vice Premiers Yury Trutnev, Yury Borisov, and Tatiana Golikova are still with us. So is Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, though his other job as first vice premier has gone to Putin advisor Andrey Belousov instead. Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and Internal Affairs Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev will also keep their posts. Among the new vice premiers appointed to serve in Mishutin’s new cabinet are Rosreestr head Viktoria Abramchenko, Federal Tax Service deputy head Alexey Overchuk (who served under Mishustin in that role), Moscow Vice Mayor Marat Khusnullin, and Gazprom Media board chair Dmitry Chernyshenko. Konstantin Chuychenko, formerly a vice premier and the cabinet’s chief of staff, is now the justice minister. Former education regulatory chief Sergey Kravtsov has been appointed minister of education, government film department head Olga Lyubimova has taken over as culture minister, and the Ministry of Northern Caucasus Affairs has been eliminated (though longtime Attorney General Yury Chaika will serve as a presidential envoy to the region).
