Missile hits 9-storey block in Kyiv, people killed

A missile hit a 9-storey residential building in the Ukrainian capital, several storeys collapsed; there are rescuers working on site, says Kyiv’s mayor Vitali Klitschko.

“There are still people under the rubble. Some people were evacuated, two were taken to hospital. The rescuers continue doing their job, there are doctors on site,” Klitschko said on his Telegram.

Part of the building caught fire after the missile hit; the top three floors were partially destroyed, says Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.

The rescuers have managed to save a 7-year-old girl from under the rubble. The body of a man “with no signs of life,” possibly her father, was also dragged out, says Anton Herashchenko, an Interior Ministry official. The doctors are now fighting for the life of the girl’s mother who is trapped under a slab of concrete.

“The injured are receiving medical aid. People in hospitals are in satisfactory condition. Doctors say there is no critical danger. It is obvious that there are people still alive under the rubble, the rescuers are trying to help them,” Klitschko said.

Moreover, a kindergarten was hit by another missile nearby, leaving a shell crater as wide as 7 metres.
