The Central Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia has initiated a second criminal case against politician and journalist Vladimir Kara-Murza, currently held in a pre-trial detention facility over “fake news” law charges, his advocate Vadim Prokhorov told Novaya Gazeta. This time, the case was opened according to part 1 of article 284.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation — “Implementation of activities of a foreign or international non-governmental organisation, the activities of which have been declared undesirable on the territory of the Russian Federation.”

According to the politician’s lawyers, Kara-Murza has not been yet officially charged, the ruling about the initiation of a criminal case has not yet been seen neither by Kara-Murza nor his lawyers. The only thing known at the moment is that the case was opened on 13 July 2022.

His lawyers Vadim Prokhorov and Olga Mikhaylova do not have any further information to share at this point.

From April 2022, Kara-Murza has been held in a Moscow pre-trial detention facility, he is accused of “publicly spreading knowingly false information about the use of the Russian Armed Forces”. He has pleaded not guilty.
