Lukashenko signs legislation allowing Belarusians convicted of 'extremism' to lose citizenship

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has signed legislation that makes it possible for people convicted of “extremism” to be stripped of their Belarusian citizenship.

The changes are slated to go into effect in the summer of 2023. Under the new law, Belarusians who live abroad and who have been convicted of “extremist activity” or “doing grave harm” to the interests of the state will be at risk of losing their citizenship, even if they are not citizens of any other country.
