The reason is simple: there are fewer and fewer believers, church communities are shrinking, and therefore, very soon financial problems arise or the need for a church building disappears altogether. The country has an abundance of temple buildings, built mainly in the post-war period and in need of major repairs. Some churches are handed over to Orthodox communities that are growing due to the influx of immigrants - anything is better than tearing them down.
