““ Arkady ”is a trip 14 years long with the poet Vladimir Gandelsman. It begins at the Central Station of New York in 2001, shortly after the attack on September 11, and ends 14 years later on the other side of the Hudson River. Whatever places to open along the way - whether it is the steaming ruins of the towers or the street of Bronx, the park or the Metro car, Arkady - that is, the paradise, as the poets called it, is present and appearing in them, ”the author’s annotation says to the film.
Helga Landauer (Olshwang) - poet, screenwriter and director. Born in Moscow. She graduated from the script department and graduate school VGIK. Since 1996 he has been living in the USA. The author of the films “Far from Venice” (1998), “The Journey of Dmitry Shostakovich” (2006, together with O. Dvornichenko), “The film about Anna Akhmatova” (2008), “Distributing to another” (2009, English “Diversions” ), “ Orpheus Diary” (2011, English. Closer than They Appear ” ). The film "Arkady" in the fall of 2015 was demonstrated at the International Film Festival "Message to Man" (Petersburg).
Vladimir Gandelsman in an interview tells about the story of the creation of the film: “Helga is my friend and ally, since the poet. And her education is VGIK. She came to Bronx, where I lived then, in 2001. Her father Julius Olshwang is an operator, a professional. I read poetry and said something, they shot. It was one or twice, I don’t remember now. After 14 years, that is, in 2015, they visited me in Fort Lee, in the state of New Jersey, where I live now, and we talked again. So in the film, the video applies to two meetings, and not to all this period. I think that Helga had an idea to make a film because my last book is called “Arkady”. Yes, in the poetry of Arkady is a completely paradise, idyllic and happy area. This determined the name of the collection, and my middle name (Arkadievich) served as insignificant, but undoubted confirmation of the correctness of the choice. ”
