Sudan has received a batch of Russian MiG-29 fighters, the Sudan Tribune reported on July 21. According to an anonymous informed source of the newspaper, a batch of about ten MiGs was secretly transported to the country from Belarus in early July. However, the source did not specify who the supplier of the fighters was - Belarus or another Eastern European country. They are currently stationed at the Wadi Saidna Sudanese Air Force base near Omdurman. The newspaper writes that Belarus is one of the suppliers of weapons for Sudan. An agreement between the two countries on military cooperation, exchange of experience and achievements in the military field was signed in June 2006. Russia was already accused last year of supplying weapons to Sudan, but the Russian Foreign Ministry rejected Amnesty International's accusations. And in May of this year, rebels from Darfur shot down a Russian MiG-29 over Omdurman. An instructor pilot from the Ryazan Higher Military School died. The Ministry of Defense stated that no instructors were officially sent to Sudan. It was later revealed that the pilot had recruited to work in Sudan after being discharged. According to UN Security Council Resolution 1591, the supply of any types of weapons to the Sudanese government or rebels in Darfur for combat operations in the region is prohibited.
