In Europe, celebrations mark the 50th anniversary of unification. And the Pope again noted that for some reason, references to the “Christian roots of European civilization” “fell out” of all the documents. The EU public reacted to the Pope's speeches with caution. Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi said that today “we have the opportunity not to appeal to the past, but to look to the future.” In Germany they fear that if the alliance is viewed as a closed club of Christians, then how can Turkish Muslims join the EU? On the Internet, however, there is a demand to “more firmly fence off our Christian world from those of other faiths.” But the Pope clearly does not mean such barbarity.
