The number of scientists is growing unevenly

According to the latest report from the French Ministry of Higher Education and Science, the number of scientific workers in the country increased by 22% over 10 years (2001-2011). This equates to growth of 3.4% per annum on average, compared with 2.4% in Germany, 4.0% in the UK, 1.3% in the US and just 0.1% in Japan. In terms of the absolute number of scientists - 249 thousand - France now ranks 8th in the world (or 7th if we count the share of the total economically active population). The top five countries in terms of the total number of researchers have not changed since 2000: USA (1,413 thousand), China (1,318 thousand), Japan (657 thousand), Russia (448 thousand) and Germany (328 thousand) .

The leader in the share of scientists in the entire economically active population is small Finland. In this country, there are almost 15 researchers for every thousand employed, while in the USA and France there are about 9, in Russia - 6, and in China - only 1.5.

Economic impact of social networks

According to audit agency Deloitte, global economic activity associated with the social network Facebook in 2014 amounted to $227 billion and contributed to the creation of 4.5 million jobs worldwide. Almost half of these positive effects are in the United States ($100 billion and 1.1 million jobs). The next beneficiaries of this activity are the European Union ($51 billion or 44 billion euros), then the Asia-Pacific region ($35 billion) and Latin America ($21 billion).

The magnitude of these economic effects has almost tripled over the past 3 years. In France alone, economic activity around Facebook generated an additional 6 billion euros in income in 2014 and created 78 thousand jobs. Three main components contributed to this: 1) the creation of additional opportunities for more targeted marketing online (3.3 billion euros and 36 thousand jobs); 2) creation and use of mobile applications for the network (1.8 billion euros and 27 thousand jobs); 3) creation of additional demand for mobile network devices (1.6 billion euros and 16 thousand jobs).
