On March 28, from 13.00 to 16.00, a rally in defense of Baikal will be held on Bolotnaya Square in Moscow. The event was organized by the coalition of public organizations “For Baikal!”
As the Babr.Ru website reminds, for more than 40 years the Baikal Pulp and Paper Mill (BPPM) poisoned Baikal with its wastewater and it was because of this that it was stopped. However, in early January, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin signed a decree allowing the discharge of BPPM wastewater into Lake Baikal. Now the plant can freely discharge wastewater into the lake, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. In addition, on the shores of the unique lake it is now possible to store waste of all hazard classes and burn it.
Coalition of public organizations “For Baikal!” demands the cessation of discharges and emissions by the Baikal Pulp and Paper Mill (BPPM) and the repeal of the resolution of the Government of the Russian Federation allowing BPPM to discharge untreated wastewater into Baikal, as well as the creation of alternative jobs in the city of Baikalsk through the development of environmentally and socially oriented industries.
