At least thanks to leaks from the Kremlin in the Kommersant newspaper, a fundamentally different version of the failure of the Russian intelligence network in the United States appeared than the one that was proposed by American counterintelligence.

It turns out that the cause of the failure was not the amazing mediocrity of the agents who called the Russian diplomats to eliminate the problems with the computers. The guilt of the traitor is a certain colonel Shcherbakov, who was no less than the head of the American department of illegal intelligence of the SVR.

I must say that in this case, the reporters of Kommersant draw a picture of an amazing mess that reigns in the SVR. The daughter of himself, perhaps, is an important secretary in intelligence, it turns out that he lives calmly in the United States. Moreover, no one was alerted by the fact that this officer refuses to increase. No one suspected that he was just afraid to undergo a test on a lie detector. But even this unsightly picture, obviously, is better than the explanation of the failure of Russian intelligence officers with gloating non -professionalism. In the end, you can not insure your betrayal. Let us recall at least Aims, who worked for the SVR Oldrich, who headed the Soviet CIA counterintelligence department.

One difference, Aims is in prison, and Shcherbakov left. But justice will triumph - a well -deserved punishment awaits the traitor to Shcherbakov. Kommersant quotes a senior employee of the presidential administration, who said that Mercader had already been sent for a fugitive colonel, recalling Trotsky's killer. At the same time, the Kremlin did not specify how these threats are consistent with the repeated statements of the leadership of the SVR that it has long and forever abandoned the practice of murders.

It seems that it was decided to kill the comic effect of this whole spy on a sinister story about the traitor and the killers sent to him. At the same time, the real state of affairs, in which the defectors who have surrendered dozens of colleagues live quite remarkably in the West, does not bother anyone. In fact, it is better for the killers, if only not clowns.

After all, the main goal of leaks is to stop riding over Russian scouts. From the accusation he had followed: the insidious Russian spies over many years of work could not take possession of even the most poorly American secrets. It turns out that all our spies in America (it is difficult to assume that Shcherbakov did not surrender everyone in his post) did nothing.

But no, it turns out, the vile Colonel Shcherbakov issued our super-Super-Superigent, 65-year-old Mikhail Vasenkov, also known as Juan Lazaro. Sended abroad in the 60s, Vasenkov successfully worked in Latin America, then moved to the United States. There, according to the sources of Kommersant, he succeeded so much that he could get the schedule of foreign visits of the American president for several years to come. I won’t know only why this is a schedule, unless, of course, a terrorist attack is planned. However, Vasenkov’s successes were so impressed by Moscow that in Soviet times he received the title of a hero, and in Russian became a general.

Vasenkov, according to sources, worked so well that the FBI could not provide any evidence of his criminal activity. And then a villain Shcherbakov appeared in his cell, who presented a personal file stolen from the center. But even then the real scout did not break. They did not get anything from him with the help of torture: the elderly person had a leg and ribs. Frankly, all this is like the script of a spy series. Well, what is the point of dragging the original documents abroad abroad, when they could at least be re -reset and transported in a safer way. It turns out that the most valuable agent risked only to arrange a melodramatic scene in the camera. The story of torture is even more doubtful. When producing arrests, the Americans probably already planned an exchange. Why substitute?

All this dubious story has another more or less obvious reason. In the “dashing 90s” of the KGB, it was fragmented into several departments. When the former FSB director became president, the special service managed to take almost the entire KGB inheritance for himself - this is FAPSI and the border wrap. Only the foreign intelligence service remained. Will anyone take advantage of the current scandal to drive the SVR into the FSB? The article “Kommersant” indicates that the supporter of this is the former director of the FSB, now Secretary of the Security Council Nikolai Patrushev. Is it not from the Council of Security Council that most of the materials used by Kommersant leaked?

Among the many questions that arise after reading the article, no one has yet asked the most obvious: is it worth a sheepskin? Does Russia need illegal intelligence, for the failures of which a worldwide shame has to be paid? Especially illegal intelligence in the USA? Let us leave the authors of the detectives of history in which our scouts turn out to be advisers to the "their" presidents. Illegal has the same chance to climb up as any other person - a rare combination of abilities and luck is necessary. Therefore, it is difficult to count on it. By the way, proof may serve as the inability to get secrets arrested in the United States.

In the 50-60s, illegal immigrants were needed so that at the beginning of the “hot” war, when the embassy stops working, and with it the “legal” residency, in the enemy camp there were people who would supply information to the center. They could be “switched” by previously recruited agents who worked with “legal” scouts. However, when it became clear to everyone that the war with the United States would be nuclear and will turn into instant mutual destruction, the need for illegal immigrants disappeared. I note that the same Americans abandoned illegal intelligence back in the 50s.

But Russia is not. Surprisingly, intelligence - an occupation of purely rational and even mundane - in the heads of Russian chiefs became value in itself. After all, it is necessary, looking like a mean tear, at least with someone to sing about what “the homeland begins”-Gandhi died. A lot of money was spent on the maintenance of the intelligence network in the United States, which did not report anything at all. But the agent network in America is the same necessary attribute of a great power as a nuclear arsenal. But in this case, the humiliation should be accepted as a given that is inevitable with the next failure of this network.
