From 2010, military police will be created within the Russian army. A source in the Ministry of Defense reported this to Interfax. The total staff will be five thousand people. The military police will report to the first deputy minister. As Kommersant adds with reference to the head of the Committee on Defense and Security of the Federation Council Viktor Ozerov, the military police will be created as a result of the merger of military commandant's offices with traffic police. If there is simply a resubordination of these structures (commandant's offices and traffic police are now subordinate to garrison chiefs) without expanding functions and powers, then a ministerial order is sufficient to establish a military police. Otherwise, amendments to the legislation will need to be made.
