Stricter than Europe

The general director of the Latvian Food and Veterinary Service, Vineet Veldre, is very surprised by the Russian ban on Latvian sprats. The Russian standard for benzopyrene content of 1 microgram per kilogram is five times stricter than the European Union standard, but Russia was informed that sprats did not meet this standard back in 2003 (no one cared then). He claims that if the norm is observed, sprats will simply become tasteless. And the main question is how much of this benzopyrene is interesting in Russian products?
