The most pressing issue of the meeting is the transit of natural gas to Europe through Ukraine. The day before, this problem was discussed in Moscow, but a compromise was never found between Gazprom and the Ukrainian Naftagaz. Therefore, it is unknown whether Russia will supply gas to Ukraine in 2006, which means that the Ukrainians may try to make up for losses by transiting gas to Europe. Unable to cope with the situation on its own, the Russian side decided to complain about the intractable partner to a third interested party.
