Last stronghold

On August 22, Libyan rebels took control of almost the entire territory of Tripoli except for the Bab al-Aziziya quarter, where the residence of the country's leader Muammar Gaddafi is located. Where Gaddafi himself is is still unknown. There is information that some of the military loyal to the leader are throwing down their weapons and surrendering. However, there were also reports that troops subordinate to Gaddafi continued to control some areas. The fighting continues, the first armored units of the elite brigade commanded by Gaddafi's son Khamis have arrived at the government complex, and the rebels are suffering serious losses. The International Criminal Court confirms the arrest of one of Gaddafi's sons, Seif al-Islam. Meanwhile, representatives of the rebels' political body, the Transitional National Council, are moving towards Tripoli from the city of Benghazi, where they have been based until now.

During the day, NATO forces destroyed 14 missile launchers, one tank and three air defense radars, as well as other weapons, facilities and military equipment of Gaddafi’s troops. European leaders are calling on the leader of the Libyan revolution to surrender.

RIA Novosti, citing the Qatari TV channel Al-Jazeera, reported that the head of the Libyan government, Al-Baghdadi al-Mahmudi, who until recently acted as Gaddafi's main representative, fled to Tunisia.
