Arbitrators at the Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce found evidence of the Russian government's interest in expropriating Yukos property. As Vedomosti reminds, on September 12, it was decided to recover three and a half million dollars in damages from Russia in favor of the British company RosinvestCo UK Ltd., which is the holder of Yukos shares. The arbitrators found that Russia's expropriation actions were a violation of the agreement on mutual protection of investments, which the USSR and Great Britain signed in 1989. The expropriation, according to the arbitrators, was illegal because it discriminated against YUKOS and was a tool of pressure on a political opponent.
According to data analyzed by Stockholm experts, more than one Yukos used tax evasion schemes, for which the company was subjected to severe sanctions. However, other oil companies doing the same were not affected. In addition, eight months before the start of the campaign against YUKOS, the company was subject to a tax audit, during which no violations were discovered - and when YUKOS was audited the next time, many of them were revealed. And the legendary company Baikalfinancegroup, which acquired Yuganskneftegaz at an auction, aroused great suspicion among the arbitrators: strangely, this hitherto unknown buyer, who did not even have an office, found $1.7 billion and at the same time acted in the interests of the state company Rosneft "
The arbitrators' decision, which Russia challenged in the Swedish state court in December, threatens the country with billions in losses.
