Darwin on trial

St. Petersburg schoolgirl Maria Schreiber stated at a press conference in the spring that the uncontested study of the theory of evolution violates her rights and offends religious feelings. Now the plaintiffs are asking schools to move beyond Darwin and introduce children to other points of view. In court, the girl’s interests are represented by her father, who believes that Darwin’s theory is unproven and, moreover, contributes to the inculcation of the cult of “bestial humanity.” At the school where Maria studies, however, no one knows about her “offended feelings.” Many generally suspect that the lawsuit is just an attempt by Kirill Schreiber to attract attention to his advertising agency on the eve of the elections.
