Yesterday, for wine drinking with the smartest Alexander Etkind (yes, envy me - not every day manages to communicate with the largest historian and professor of Cambridge for a long time and personally) talked about why Russian humanities are so difficult to make a career outside Russia.
It would seem an obvious answer: language. But the problem is that these Russian intellectuals know English sometimes better than German, Asian or Chilean professors. But they quite calmly make an academic career in America and Europe, but we do not.
I have a version, while little reinforced, as can be explained. Actually, my thesis is as follows: any Western scientist from a young age knows that a career is a constant competition. Moreover, at 40, it is even tougher than in 20. Competition for the departments and laboratories at the university, for millionth research grants. Hence, he has the principle of career formation: daily structural construction of the evidence base, that I am the best expert in this area.
This is expressed in several principles that I call the discipline of the career (well or the brain). Firstly, daily, expert, indistinguishable work on a clear plan: annually a certain number of books and articles, annual research, annual certain number of performances, a clear tracking of the best universities for him and a desire to get there is a constant representation of themselves in places for places in them. Not in the subjunctive inclination “It would be good to write a book and article”, namely, in the mode “I thought, I did”. This is such a scientific hygiene.
Secondly, the ability to sell yourself qualitatively (in a good sense): the art of presentation (we are all talkers, but very few are ready to represent themselves in writing of high quality).
Thirdly, scientific openness: desire and ability to constantly interact with colleagues around the world. Openness to dialogue and as a result - generating new opportunities for yourself. There are no illusions: there is also a lot of mutual hatred (especially when “cutting” millionth grants), but at the same time the dialogue and openness of research is an indisputable fact, because everyone understands - this is useful to him.
Fourth (this is added on the hint of the smartest opponent), a lot of things that are basically laid there in the undergraduate and magistracy (late study of fundamental studies and concepts with pronouncing and understanding, the ability to regularly write their own thoughts and ideas, the ability to independently criticize other people's ideas, etc.), we are not included in the methodological package.
We still have “lectures-seminars”, and here we are lucky with teachers. That is, even our very talented humanitarium at the exit from the candidate and with the prospects in the West initially has a hole in the background, which he either, having either gripping his teeth, turns up by adhesive samo formation (but not everything can be able to catch up), or leaves for RAW Talent , but still methodically does not reach its local colleagues. Therefore, everything is difficult. Primordial, the education system laid down low competitiveness.
In Russian reality, students and graduate students are still used to competing. People in humanitarian science and in science of 35 are firmly sure that they should be appreciated without their further efforts. Just "for the name." Since we have qualitative names in any expert science-units.
And getting into a new aggressive expert environment, when your name is significant, but not unique (hundreds with names of the same level), “our man” is most often lost and leaves the great scientific stories, becoming an “expert in Russia”, and in the worst case, a hysteria on Facebook.
That is (brief preliminary conclusion) the problem is not in the language (it normally learned in a year) and not in relation to the country.
The main problems:
1) Oblomovism - not to live in a subjunctive inclination (“when I write a book”), and write daily, even “I don’t want to” through it; In fact, it is age mental laziness;
2) Inability to serve yourself as a scientific product.
