Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis, according to Interfax, sent a letter to EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn, touching on the problems experienced by the Patriarchate of Constantinople in Istanbul, primarily “the non-recognition of its ecumenical character by the Turkish state.”
In June, Turkey's Supreme Court of Appeal ruled that the Patriarchate of Constantinople had no "legitimate basis for claims to ecumenical status" and emphasized that the patriarchate, which was "allowed to reside on Turkish territory," remains a subject of Turkish, not international law.
“We must unite our voices and explain to everyone that decisions of this kind have absolutely no place in the modern world,” said D. Bakoyannis after a recent meeting with Benedict XVI. She intends to raise this issue at the meeting of her European colleagues starting next Monday in Brussels, and Greek ambassadors to foreign countries have been instructed to “explain this problem” in dialogue with the relevant governments.
