Very strange: United Russia appealed to President Dmitry Medvedev with a request to suspend the construction of the Moscow-St. Petersburg highway through the Khimki forest. Interfax reports this with reference to the party's press service. Let us recall that the decision to transfer the territory of the Khimki Forest to the category of transport land was made by the party leader, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. The idea of constructing a bypass route was unexpectedly supported by Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, having heeded the advice of Oleg Mitvol, prefect of the Northern District of Capitals, who proposed running the route through the Molzhaninovsky district; this option is also supported by forest defenders.
That is, it was first necessary to beat almost to death the editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Khimkinskaya Pravda” Mikhail Beketov, who spoke out in defense of the forest, create all sorts of obstacles to environmentalists and activists, detain them in violation of the law, set masked people against them, so that later they could say “And really, let’s do as they suggest”? Very strange.
The leader of the Movement in Defense of the Khimki Forest, Evgenia Chirikova, is pleased with the decision of United Russia: “I don’t know which specific people support us,” she told Gazeta.Ru, “but I see that our three-year struggle for the forest is yielding results.” . She doesn’t care what is behind this statement by the ruling party, but she hopes “that they still made this decision based on the fact that they also have lungs, that they also don’t want to breathe this fumes. I hope that the president will listen to the opinion of the people and his own ruling party and really stop logging.” And the president really listened: he instructed the government to suspend the construction of a highway through the forest. “Despite the fact that a separate government decision was made on the construction of the highway, despite the fact that it was considered by our judicial system and decisions were made on this issue, our people, including representatives of political parties from the ruling United Russia to the opposition, public associations and expert circles say that it requires additional analysis,” he said in his video blog.
