A bearded man with a plastic bag on his head breathes heavily, while a child’s voice believes: “51, 50, 49, 48, 47 ...” This man is Joe (Joaquin Phoenix), a former Afghan veteran, now a killer, or a single chopper, a rescuer and a punisher persecuted. A narrow plane cabinet, a plastic bag, the cries of the mother lying on the floor, the father in his underpants with a hammer. These personnel cannot be called flashbacks: they blaze in Joe's mind every minute, even when he is busy with unknown but hard work-someone saves someone, he eliminates someone with the help of a hammer ... all this is not very clear (apparently, the film received a prize for the best scenario in Cannes). The new client is a casual senator of the vet, whose daughter was kidnapped. Joe quickly finds Nina, a blond of a 14-year-old girl in a night shirt. Armed with his favorite weapon, a hammer, Joe technically releases Nina. But troubles are just beginning.
The previous work of the British director Lynn Ramsey was an alarming and funny family tragedy “Something wrong with Kevin”-shot back in 2011, this picture was found in Cannes with a standing ovation. Since then, Ramsey had only downtime and problems: she talked about plans for SCI - FI (“something like“ moby Dika ”in space”) was supposed to take off Walley Portman “Jane Given the Ruzhe”, but on the eve of the first day of filming, she quarreled with producers who forced her to depart from the original script of Brian Daffield (who fell into the “black list of the best scenarios of 2011 ”) and making a good movie with a happy ending is a thing unacceptable for Ramsey, which always shot the movie uncomfortable and unpleasant.
© Who Not Productions“You have never been here” completely fits into this anxious tradition: reduced from the ten -page story of the American writer Jonathan Aims (by the way, the author of the cult series “deadly bored”), the film begins as a “hostage” of Pierre Morerel, and then turns into a nightmare Freudian dream with ultraneasy. For this script, she deservedly received a “palm branch” (the premiere of the film took place in Cannes in May 2017), and Joaquin Phoenix was a prize as the best actor.
The Phoenix, who received for “you ...” an acting prize in Cannes, had previously quite outstanding roles - both James Gray and the floor of Thomas Anderson, but “you have never been here” - a special case. A Phoenix, overgrown with a decorative cloak beard, plays a killer, who himself is dead - in any case, soul. The only thing Joe holds in this world is the dry mother in whom life is barely warm. He sits in the bedroom and holds her hand after the “psychosis” viewed alone (not only spectators, but also the heroes of the film laugh at this joke), he wipes water in the bathroom, sitting in the kitchen, they sing a gentle song about love together - then Joe will sing her again in the same kitchen, lying on the floor side by side with a dying enemy.
© Who Not ProductionsRamsey is not only a talented screenwriter who described in detail the day from the life of a mercenary, but also a director who is quite experimentally treated with the material. With the help of torn installation in the spirit of Jonas Mekas (super-short shots here are interspersed with unbearably long), anxious music (the soundtrack for the film was written by Johnny Greenwood, the solo-guitarist of the Radiohead group) and she managed to show what is happening, rather, not in the incomprehensible, conspiracy the world Deep state , but in the intermittent, sick consciousness of the Joe psychopath, which remains in this world only by official necessity (hence the strange name).
© Who Not ProductionsThe Ramsey film is somewhere at the intersection of hallucinations and conspiracies, which is mentioned in the darkened labyrinths and conspiracies, is somewhere at the intersection of the “taxi driver” and “Leon”, praises the hammer at Oldboy, and the know-how to represent the terrible-the “paranormal phenomenon”-and still looks radical enough to be considered, if not a revelation, it is certainly an achievement. Ramsey manages to force the viewer to identify himself not even with the main character, but with his exhausted nervous system - the physiologism of the video and soundtrack literally causes the viewer to torment (O'Kay - discomfort); It’s good that the movie is only about twenty hours. It is bad that at the entrance they do not give out packages - paper.
