Mukhu Aliyev lost his post as president of Dagestan. His place was taken by Magomedsalam Magomedov, the son of Magomedali Magomedov, who had led the republic since Soviet times. For many observers, this choice of President Dmitry Medvedev was unexpected: St. Petersburg lawyer Magomed Abdulaev was predicted to win.
