The Kyrgyz parliament voted against changes to the Criminal Code that would abolish criminal penalties for polygamy. The fact is that cohabitation with two or more women while running a common household in Kyrgyzstan carries a criminal penalty of two years in prison. Moreover, for the very fact of cohabitation, and not for falsification of documents and so on. Minister of Justice Marat Kaiypov took the initiative to repeal this article of the Criminal Code; he considered that polygamy is not a socially dangerous act. However, 42 out of 75 parliament members voted against repealing the law.
