Sergei Stepashin made a statement that partly sheds light on the origins of the grandiose sports patriotism that suddenly inflamed the Russian authorities. According to him, some of the facilities being built in Sochi in preparation for the 2014 Winter Olympics may be privatized, RIA Novosti reports. True, the head of the Accounts Chamber immediately noted: “If the state can effectively use and maintain these facilities, I would leave them in federal ownership,” since “these are unique facilities.” As a Rosbalt correspondent reports, Stepashin also said that the British Control Chamber offered to provide its specialists free of charge to help the Accounts Chamber of the Russian Federation in checking the expenditure of budget funds for the Olympics in Sochi. “Given the attention society and the president pay to the Olympics, I don’t think there will be basic everyday theft, it’s scary,” Stepashin said. Therefore, according to him, the main goal of the audits of the Accounts Chamber will be the efficiency of using budget funds and reducing the cost of objects. “We will consider questions about the cost of projects and the transparency of tenders in order to prevent projects from becoming more expensive and increasing budget expenses,” Stepashin said. According to him, at least 180 billion rubles of net budgetary allocations will be allocated for the Sochi Olympics. Well, what kind of theft will there be: elementary or complex, Stepashin, of course, knows better. But it’s interesting about privatization. Is it like - we build with federal funds (huge), and then all the wealth goes into private hands? And why let it slip so early? There are still 7 years until the Olympics.
