A man whom I knew well and whose courage and professionalism I sincerely admired died tragically - the general director of the Svoboda Slova company, founder and in 2005-2006 editor-in-chief of the Chernovik publication Khadzhimurad Kamalov. The newspaper he created is undoubtedly one of the freest and most honest in the Russian Federation, one of the pillars of civil society in the Republic of Dagestan.
The authorities persecuted Kamalov himself, his journalists, and the newspaper and tried to accuse him of extremism. But the Chernovik newspaper pursued and pursues exactly the line that was an alternative to radicalism - anti-corruption, human rights, calling for a national dialogue and civil peace in Dagestan.
And the killers of Khadzhimurad Kamalov aimed precisely at this dialogue. They understand perfectly well that civil peace and the rule of law in the republic are the main threat to the system of total tyranny, theft and corruption, so they do everything to incite a civil war.
Kamalov was on the hit list of self-proclaimed “avengers.” Along with him on this list were other human rights activists, public and religious figures and journalists. The authorities are obliged to ensure their safety and stop the death squads.
It is necessary to understand that the criminal activities of the “vigilantes” actually work for the Islamist underground.
I express my condolences to Kamalov’s family, friends and colleagues
Happy memory to Khadzhimurad Kamalov!
