The European Court of Human Rights found that Russia violated the right of the Yukos company to protect property. According to a court ruling in Strasbourg, the Russian tax authorities violated Article 1 of Protocol 1 (protection of property) to the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. At the same time, as RIA Novosti reports, the court found that these violations occurred from 2000 to 2001, and not to 2003, as the company’s shareholders, led by former top managers Stephen Theede and Bruce Misamore, asked to admit. The company's trial was found to be unfair under Article 4 of the convention.
However, the court did not find that Russia had violated Article 14, which prohibits discrimination, including on the basis of political opinion.
In addition, no decision was made on the compensation that Russia should pay to the company.
