The chairman of the human rights committee “Civic Assistance”, a member of the Presidential Council for Promoting the Development of Civil Society Institutions and Human Rights, a member of the board of the Human Rights Center “Memorial” Svetlana Gannushkina, as well as the center itself, were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010. Gannushkina and Memorial were nominated by the leader of the Norwegian Conservative Party, Erna Solberg. According to her, Memorial and Gannushkina are the people who are at the forefront of protecting human rights and “risk their lives in the name of their work.”

It became known that among the other contenders for this award (last year, as we remember, it was unexpectedly received by the current US President Barack Obama) is the former governor of the US state of Illinois, George Ryan, who advocated the abolition of the death penalty (he is currently in prison , convicted of corruption), and Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo, who is also now in prison.

Another candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize is not a person or even an organization, but... the Internet. The web was put forward by the Italian version of Wired magazine, according to which it is a means of improving the possibility of dialogue, debate and reaching consensus through communication, as well as a means of promoting democracy. Among those who signed up for the Internet nomination is 2003 laureate Iranian human rights activist Shirin Ebadi.
