Video: Christmas Penguin

John Lewis' pre-holiday video has amassed an army of fans in just a few hours

The British company John Lewis's Christmas video received over 1.4 million views within a few hours of its publication and became the starting point for the launch of a large-scale campaign on Twitter.

The John Lewis video about a boy Sam and his unusual friend named Monty is dedicated to the themes of loneliness, childhood, love and friendship. According to CNET , it, like the company's Christmas commercials last year, serves as a kind of "signal for the British that it's time to start preparing gifts."

The soundtrack to the two-minute video was John Lennon's "Real Love" performed by Tom Odell.

For the 2014 Christmas campaign, the hashtag #MontythePenguin was created and launched. According to marketing agency Hotwire, in the first three hours after the video was unveiled, Twitter users published 49,562 tweets with this tag. In addition to ordinary users of the service, some brands took part in the flash mob.

John Lewis accompanied its Christmas story with the release of a corresponding line of goods: the Monty's Christmas book, plush copies of Monty and various products with his image appeared on sale. You can also download the free app for iOS or Android and explore the drawn world of Sam and his penguin in a special section on the retailer’s website.

In support of the campaign, Monty the Penguin's Twitter account was also launched on the morning of November 6th. It took him half a day to collect over 9 thousand subscribers.

In 2013, John Lewis' Christmas ad featured "the beast who never saw Christmas" and in 2012 it told the story of two snowmen falling in love.
