The Investigative Committee stopped the criminal prosecution of Deputy Finance Minister Sergei Storchak due to the absence of a crime. Storchak was accused of attempted fraud. He was detained on November 15, 2007 as part of a criminal case for attempted theft of budget funds. In October 2008, he was released on his own recognizance.
On November 26, the Arbitration Court ordered the Ministry of Finance to return Sodexim CJSC, whose general director Viktor Zakharov was accused in the same case, $43.4 million.
It is not yet known whether Storchak will file a claim for damages for his 11 months in custody.
