Deputies of the State Assembly of the Altai Republic at an extraordinary session held on Thursday voted to vest gubernatorial powers in the former Minister of Internal Affairs of the region, Alexander Berdnikov. There was no debate about the president's proposed candidacy. 34 out of 36 parliamentarians voted for Berdnikov. The powers of the current head of the republic, Mikhail Lapshin, appointed to this position after the death of Mikhail Evdokimov in a car accident, expire on January 6, 2006.
