The Shaolin Buddhist monastery in central China dates back to the 5th century, but owes its worldwide fame to popular culture. Literature, cinema and popular music have made its name almost a household name and synonymous with the very concept of “martial arts”.
Modern Shaolin is often condemned by advocates of traditional values, who believe that the monastery pays too much attention to the commercial side of its work - paid kung fu schools and entertainment for tourists. In the same regard, in the fall of 2014, the news that Shaolin began searching for a media director to build and improve branding received wide resonance.
TJ looked into the territory of the monastery along with tourists who did not miss the opportunity to publish photos on Instagram.
