What is the ambitious superhero project “Defenders” and how did the Russian Internet greet it?
On March 30, the premiere of the first teaser of the Russian science fiction action film “Defenders,” directed by Sarik Andreasyan, took place, telling about the adventures of a team of superheroes from the post-Soviet space. A little earlier that day, the composition of the team of domestic superheroes was announced .
TJ looked at what the ambitious superhero project “Defenders” is like and how it was received by the Russian Internet.
“The Defenders” will tell about a squad of superheroes created during the Cold War by the secret organization “Patriot”. It included representatives of various nationalities of the USSR. For many years they had to hide their superpowers, but in difficult times for the country they will have to once again stand up to defend the Motherland.
In the fall of 2014, the creators of “The Defenders” held a casting , in which anyone with an acting education could take part. After more than a thousand acting resumes and two rounds of in-person screen tests, the performers for the roles of four superheroes and the main villain were chosen.
Possessing remarkable strength, Arsus, who, if necessary, turns into a bear with a machine gun at the ready, will be played by Anton Pampushny from the historical drama “Alexander. Battle of the Neva". Sanzhar Madiev will play the role of the wind-man Khan, who masterfully wields bladed weapons and various martial arts. Sebastian Sisak-Grigoryan will play the role of Lera, who is able to control the elements of earth and represents the Caucasus. And finally, Alina Lanina in the role of Ksenia will be able to command the water element, turn her body into water and swim any distance without oxygen.

It is also known that Stanislav Shirin will play the role of the main villain. He will play an evil genius named August Kuratov, who has a miraculous device “MODULE-1”, which allows him to control any equipment in sight. He wants to gather an army of his own clones to take over Moscow and then the whole world. It is he who the quartet of Russian superheroes will confront.
The secret organization “Patriot” will be led by Valeria Shkirando, who could recently be seen in the film “Battalion”, and Vyacheslav Razbegaev, who will play the role of Major General Nikolai Dolgov, was entrusted with supervising the superheroes.
“The Defenders” is produced by the film company Enjoy Movies, founded in 2010 by Sarik Andreasyan, Ghevond Andreasyan and Georgiy Malkov and known for such films as “The American Heist”, “What Men Do”, “Moms” and others.
For the first time, ambitious plans to create a Russian superhero cinematic universe became known in September 2014 at the Kino Expo international forum in St. Petersburg during a presentation by the distributor Karoprokat, dedicated to Enjoy Movies projects.
Twitter users greeted information about the actors and the first teaser of “The Defenders” with a flurry of comments.
We learned how to make movies and even learned how to make special effects and trailers, but there was no sense in all this post-Soviet cinema.

In the movie The Defenders there should be a veteran man throwing sharp medals.

One of the first attempts to adapt superhero themes in modern Russian cinema was the film “Black Lightning” by Timur Bekmambetov. The film did not receive the highest rating among viewers: on IMDb it is 5.9 points out of 10, and on Kinopoisk it is 5.5 points out of 10.
If the creators of “The Defenders” manage to bring all their ideas to life, then in a few years we will have a domestic franchise with a bunch of superheroes from the post-Soviet space and spin-offs about them.
Filming on The Defenders is expected to begin on April 27, and the film itself will hit the big screen in 2016.
