The US administration approved the construction of a new nuclear warhead. American nuclear missiles are modernized for the first time in 20 years, the Air Force reports. The new device is designed in California, it is based on the design of the warhead, tested back in the 1980s.
It is expected that the new warhead will enter the US Army for five years. It will have to be used to replace the Trannia missiles installed on submarines.
American officials emphasize that they do not intend to increase the nuclear potential, but only replace the old warheads more reliable. “We are not going to start a new nuclear weapons race,” the Air Force quotes the acting Heads of the American Atomic Atomas Nuclear Safety Agency d'Agostino.
Washington’s decision is criticized in Congress. In particular, the Senator from the Democratic Party Dina Faynstein opposed the new warheads. Many public organizations also criticized this decision, insisting that there is no need to update nuclear warheads.
But American officials argue that after five years, due to the destruction of old nuclear warheads, their number in the United States will decrease to the level of the 1950s.
In 2005, the American Congress approved work on the creation of a new warhead, but provided that they will not be accompanied by new missile tests. Nuclear tests in the United States have not been carried out since 1992, when a moratorium was introduced on them.
