Fathi Arafat, the younger brother of Yasir Arafat, died of cancer in Cairo. As RIA Novosti reports, the Israeli newspaper Ahronot reports with reference to sources in Egypt. Dr. Fathi Arafat headed the organization of a red crescent in Palestine.
Arafat, who was in the Cairo hospital, did not know about the death of his older brother. Doctors, evaluating Fathi's disease as a deadly one, decided not to aggravate his condition by news of his brother's serious illness. In addition, the last few days of Fathi Arafat have been unconscious, so he could not find out about the death of his brother.
The intestine cancer was found in the 67-year-old fatha Arafat three years ago, after which he underwent several operations. About a week ago, his condition worsened sharply, and he was placed in the Egyptian military hospital "Vadi An-Nil", where the doctors found that the disease had reached an incurable stage.
Fathi Arafat in 1957 graduated from the medical faculty of the University of Cairo, then he worked for several years in Egypt, Kuwait and Jordan. In 1968, he created and headed the Society of the Palestinian red crescent, which formed the basis of the medical structure of the Palestinian communities in various Arab countries. After signing agreements in Oslo and the creation of the Palestinian autonomy in 1994, Fathi Arafat returned to Gaza.
As RIA Novosti reports, three years ago, in connection with Fatha's disease, Arafat left the post of head of the company founded by him, but remained his honorary chairman. Since the headquarters of the Palestinian red crescent is in Cairo, he moved to Egypt. Unlike an older brother, Fathi Arafat did little politics and rarely appeared in public.
