50 kilometers of rails were stolen in the Saratov region. Local metal thieves broke all previously set records: they cut more than 600 tons of railway tracks and 11 wagons.
A citizen with rails was caught at the Engels collection point of the Vtormet company. The seller worked on a grand scale: 12-meter pieces of iron were delivered on four platforms attached to a diesel locomotive. The arrested party pulled 130 tons. As it turned out, Mr. B. was a regular customer here.
A 28-year-old resident of Engels worked for seven years as a foreman of welding train No. 2, received a good salary of 10 thousand rubles, but this summer he decided to increase his income. An enterprise called "Welding Train" is something like a warehouse, whose workers repair tracks along the entire Volga road. New and old dismantled equipment is stored here. According to the transport policemen, foreman B. at night loaded the rails that had served their purpose into the repair train (the workers at the enterprises were not privy to the essence of the matter) and sent them to scrap metal. The cars themselves were also put under pressure so as not to leave traces. Only the locomotive survived. The goods were resold to Rostov-on-Don, and then to Turkey.
According to the Department of Internal Affairs on transport, the head of the receiving point and the Engels entrepreneur-intermediary were in collusion with the railway foreman. The railroad trade continued throughout the summer. As a result, PZD suffered damage of 1.8 million rubles. The participants in the transaction were charged under article 160 of the Criminal Code “Assignment, embezzlement of property”, which provides for punishment of up to ten years in prison.
