President’s mistake. On October 16, at the University of Hofstra, New York, Barack Obama will hold a second debate on the air with a Republican opponent Mitt Romny-they will argue about foreign policy. On October 4, the first television reeds, according to unanimous opinion, won Romny, which has already led to a noticeable growth of his rating: the current president of the United States is now behind him by 1-2%
One and a half hour debates of Barack Obama and Mitt Romni at Denver University, a thirty-year-old spectators record were beaten: more than 67 million Americans observed the dispute of presidential candidates (taking into account the Internet broadcast, the audience exceeded 70 million). The last time such figures were noted during the debate of Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan in 1980. The Republicans were waiting for a fight with cautiously: Obama is considered a talented polemicist, while Romny is extremely constrained in public speeches. His supporters deliberately underestimated expectations, and only New Jersey Governor Chris Christie publicly stated that Romny would win on television battles, which incurred the anger of the Republican headquarters. However, Christie was right.
According to a survey conducted by Gallup agency, 72% of the Americans who watched the debate awarded Romny’s victory, and only 20% considered that the current president won. An angry joke with Obama was played by his personal hostility towards Romny, which journalists have been writing about for a long time and in which tens of millions of viewers were able to see. The president did not hide irritation to his opponent and almost did not look in his direction. While Romny turned directly to him, Obama looked at his papers, at the camera or at the presenter. “In the last four years, no one has spoke with him in such a tone. This not only surprised, but also offended him, ”political analyst David Gergen said on CNN.
The energetic style of Romny, who unexpectedly represented in a new image of a manager, offering specific solutions to specific problems, contrasted sharply with the president’s behavior. The candidate of the Republicans constantly went on the attack, reinforcing criticism with quotes and statistical data, and easily retorted the sluggish attempts of the head of the White House to intercept the initiative. For example, when Obama stated that he has a plan to reduce budget deficit, Romny recalled that his opponent is not just a candidate who offers his program, but a person who heads the country for four years. Romny did not fail to quote the unsuccessful statement of the vice president Joseph Biden that over the past four years, the American middle class has been buried.
Romny’s victory in television battles was not slow to affect his election rating. According to the last survey conducted by order of Reuters, 45% of Americans are going to vote for the former Governor of Massachusets, 44% for the current president (throughout September, Obama was ahead of his opponent). In addition, as the study showed, in matters of economics, the fight against unemployment and reducing the budget deficit - that is, in the key issues of the current campaign - Mitt Romnie causes more confidence in voters than Barack Obama.
The debate of the Vice President did not break the situation on October 11: Democrat Joseph Biden lost to the Republican of Paul Raanu. According to a survey of the television department conducted by CNN television company, 48% of the viewers considered Ryan’s performance more convincing, only 44% made a choice in Biden’s favor.

On October 16, Barack Obama is preparing to take revenge. The debates at the University of Hofstra, New York, will be held in Townhall format, that is, the “duels” will be able to ask all those present on the debate, and not just the moderator-this role in Denver is brilliant (and once again in his career) was played by the 78-year-old TV presenter Dim Lerer's veteran.
According to the press secretary of the presidential headquarters Jen Psaki, Obama will “take into account the experience” of an unsuccessful performance in the first match. For several days now, the head of the White House has been rehearsing the debate with his assistants. However, according to analysts, the very theme of the next discussion - foreign policy - gives the deliberate advantage of Mitt Romny.
The current president will probably merit the end of the war in Iraq and the liquidation of Osama Bin Laden, but there will be more reasons for criticism of the Republican candidate more than enough. It is expected that Romny will talk about riots in the Middle East and the recent murder of the American ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens, about the cooling of relations with Israel (the leader of the Republicans repeatedly accused Obama of the interests of the Jewish state), about too much “soft” policies against Iran and Syria, about the reluctance of the White House to introduce protectionist measures against Chinese goods, as well as “rebooting” with the Kremlin, which the Republicans consistently criticize. In the case of his victory, Romny promises to pay more attention to the situation with democracy and human rights in Russia, take a more stringent position in the issue of missile defense and sign the “Magnitsky Law”, introducing visa and financial sanctions for Russian officials involved in corruption and violations of human rights.
All these topics will probably arise during the upcoming discussion. Obama himself, however, is convinced that his mistake on the first debate was not substantial, but stylistic. In an interview with the radio hosting Joyner, the president said that he was “too polite” with his republican opponent. “It turns out that the president will behave rudely,” the former employee of the Roagan Electoral Staff ED Rogers is ironic. “Mitt Romny is probably scared.”

Meanwhile, the format of the election debate, as in past campaigns, criticize that only representatives of the two main parties are allowed to the stands. According to the rules established by the debate commission, only candidates with a support level of at least 15% in five nationwide sociological surveys can participate in the discussion. Independent candidates and representatives of small parties traditionally complain about a vicious circle: they are not allowed to debate due to a low rating, and the rating does not grow due to the lack of the rostrum. The debates “for three” took place in the United States only once, in 1992, when, in addition to the Republican George Bush and Democrat Bill Clinton, an independent candidate Ross Pen was invited to the air, who spent $ 60 million from personal funds and received in polls up to 40% (he was supported by 19% of Americans).
At the end of September, the US presidential candidate from the Libertarian Party, ex-Governor of New Mexico Gari Johnson (his rating, according to CNN, is 4%) filed a lawsuit against the debate and national committees of the Republican and Democratic Parties, accusing them of violating the antimonopoly law and conspiracy to restrict competition. The claims of the Libertarian were supported by three companies from among the sponsors of television bits that refused sponsorship in protest against restriction of discussion by two participants. The lawsuit is considered in the federal court of the Central District of California, and Johnson leaves no hope to join Obama and Romnie on October 16 and 22. Meanwhile, the nominees of small parties - in addition to Johnson, this is Jill Stein (the Green Party), Virgil Hood (the Constitutional Party) and Rocky Anderson (Justice Party) - have already announced the conduct of alternative debates, which will be broadcast on October 23 on the catarrh satellite television channel Al Jazeera.
US legislation does not require mandatory debate, however, the meeting of candidates on the air is considered an integral part of the electoral process. The first television match took place in 1960 between John Kennedy and Richard Nixon - it is believed that it was the successful performance of Kennedy that provided him with victory. Since 1976, tradition has become constant. During the current campaign of Barack Obama and Mitt Romny, they meet three times on the debate: on October 4, 16 and 22. The presidential election will be held on November 6.
