The authorities and society in Russia need to reach a consensus on the issue of fundamental values and build the country’s development on their basis, Patriarch Kirill believes.
“We must agree on the body of these values and say: if the political program of one or another party includes disagreement with these values, this political force cannot exist in our society, it is dangerous for the security, integrity, and future of the country,” he said According to Interfax, the patriarch at a meeting with State Duma deputies on Monday.
The Church is ready to begin a dialogue with political forces, including those represented in the State Duma, on the topic “what are the basic values in our people’s life, what values no one can spill, no political party, no political force can ignore.” .
“If we have a clear set of values that no one can ignore, destroy, that no one can fight, then we will have a minimum basis for public consensus,” he emphasized. “The main slogan that I would suggest for comprehension is national solidarity based on fundamental values,” the patriarch said.
Once a consensus is reached on the issue of basic values and solidarity based on them, “further this solidarity needs to be extended to various spheres of people’s lives, including interethnic relations,” to build youth and educational policies, and work with MASS MEDIA.
According to Patriarch Kirill, this is a “strategy for the development of people’s life,” and political forces need to leave “superstructural values.”
“Let our political struggle take place in these superstructure blocs. Then our next elections will not turn into the danger of another breakdown of the entire people’s life,” he emphasized.
As the Patriarch noted, we can talk about specific action programs, and the Church has its own proposals and programs. Thus, the synodal youth department, headed by Bishop Ignatius, who was present at the meeting, will also deal with the topic of interethnic relations among youth, “although the main task of this department is to instill in people high ideas and a strong moral sense through the participation of the Church in youth work.”
According to him, what happened on Manezhnaya Square “is one of the signal phenomena: a red light came on,” and this light “lights up not because someone pressed the switch, but because a certain negative potential is developing in life society."
For the patriarch, what happened on Manezhnaya Square and subsequent events is “an image of what is happening in the souls of people - of course, not the whole society, fortunately, not everyone in our country still throws their fists at each other - but the level of negative attitude towards others a person, irritability, which can turn into aggression, is incredibly high.”
The meeting with Patriarch Kirill was attended by the head of the State Duma Committee on Youth Affairs Pavel Tarakanov, deputy chairmen of the committee Alina Kabaeva and Svetlana Khorkina, members of the committee, as well as member of the Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications Robert Schlegel.
The primate expressed satisfaction with the way the dialogue on values went with the United Russia party and the Center for Social Conservative Policy, and suggested “continuing this dialogue with other political forces, represented primarily in the State Duma.”
