Borisov Gorodok

Archaeologists of the Mozhaisk expedition of the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences under the leadership of the candidate of historical sciences Boris Yanishevsky excavated small fragments of the walls of the residence of Boris Godunov-the so-called Tsarev-Borisov town, located on the way from the Vereya to Mozhaisk.

Founded in 1600, the residence was a powerful fortress with four towers. Inside the fortress, by order of Godunov, the highest church of that time was erected - the temple of Boris and Gleb 74 meters high. However, to date, no remnants of the fortress, destroyed after the Time of Troubles, and the temple, disassembled into a brick in the reign of Nicholas I, could not be found.

According to Yanishevsky, in addition to fragments of walls and a shallow moat, brick -burning stoves were also found: they prepared the so -called “sovereign brick”, from which the fortress and the temple were built. Under the remains of the Tsarev-Borisov town, under 2.5 m of sand, layers were found and more ancient times: the Tatar-Mongol invasion, the period of the Slavic development of this area and the time of the Iron Age. The most ancient finds are about 2.5 thousand years. Excavations on the site of the Borisov town, as well as on Brykina Gora in Mozhaisk and in Borodino, continue.
